From my experience, the app looks at the entire payee string as downloaded under appears in statement as to create rules. See comment above from @Emacken on Jan 9.

When I try to create a payee rule I normally have to retype the whole string out because it gets truncated with its first attempt. The renaming payee logic is so ridiculous it just needs to be abandoned and list transactions as the statement text.

Unlike Mint, Simplifi doesnt put enough detail in transactions for various banks such as Sound CU and other credit cards. They used to show detailed Payee/Sender info, POS details, etc. It makes it VERY difficult to link recurring payments, categorizing, etc.

This desperately needs fixing, especially since Mint was able to do all of this and it was a Quicken/Intuit product.

Mint was not a Quicken product.

And QS is not an INTUIT product (anymore and for years).

Agree. Would like the ability to see / pull in original bank description and rename and also be able to export full original description when backing up/downloading data. Simplifi is also pulling in my credit union's category descriptions, not the transaction name which is mighty unhelpful. Example: " charity $250" was pulled in; I logged into bank account and it was my water bill that the bank incorrectly categorized. Great for the most part so far. thanks.

  • Yes. I don't even mind that Simplifi has these built-in rules to try and make things easier "out-of-the-box", but at least don't hide these back-end rules from us… Why not show these behind-the-scenes renaming rules as Default Rules in the Rules section? Then we can just disable/edit them to our liking. Boom, problem solved.

    +1

as i've used the product more, i've learned more about how it works.

the original description is always stored in simplifi. you can see this by going to the details of any transaction — it's listed at the top. moreover, the original description always gets used for rename rules as well.

i paid a friend via venmo. it appears as "purchase 03-27 venmo *john" on my statement (and in transaction details at the top). simplifi auto-renamed it to "venmo". if i create a rename rule for "john", it will match this transaction.

as you can imagine, it's super frustrating to create rename rules for something you can't easily see.

the original description should be available as an optional column so that it's searchable (today it is not), and be included in the export.

"Please change the default for payee changes to NOT apply to all similar transactions like category changes. Every time I make a singular payee change, I have to uncheck the default. I'd imagine more people make one off changes than changes intended to apply to all." I have inadvertently changed hundreds of transactions do to this feature and my memory at 65 is horrible so I have repeated this mistake many times over.

This really does need fixed. Mint transfer here and, while Quicken has some great features, this is rudimentary.

this is desperately needed as a fix - common categories like Venmo are nearly impossible to categorize correctly without extensive manual intervention. Please fix this!

Well, I now understand this idea a whole lot better. For an account I oversee, one of the banks appends "Point Of Sale Withdrawal" to the start of EVERY single transaction. Those 24 characters take up the lion's share of the 30 characters that are downloaded at the top of each transaction.

Here are the two side-by-side which shows the problem.

    • Point Of Sale Withdrawal Great
      • 24 characters

    • Point Of Sale Withdrawal Great Wall Restaurantxxxxxxxxx INUS Trace # 9xx4xx8 characters
      • 87 characters

As presently designed, I effectively can't create renaming rules for the vast majority of this other account's spending.

When my bank sends Venmo transaction to Simplifi all transactions to various people or businesses only show as Venmo, so I have to manually change payee and category. Can Simplifi please pick up payee correctly and not the generic Venmo on all transactions.

Adding a link to this other post that has a lot more details related to my August 28th post. Unfortunately, I don't know how much control Quicken Simplifi will really have over this. The problem is really with the individual bank. My reasoning for believing this is in the other post.

At this point, I'm convinced that Simplifi has very little control over this problem. I have multiple different banks synced with Simplifi and different ones act differently. It's a problem with the way the data is coming to Simplifi from the bank…not a problem of how Simplifi is treating it once they get it. If the bank provides the entire downloaded Payee name to Simplifi, then Simplifi displays it.

I'm working with one of my banks to try and troubleshoot this. I'll track what I find in this other post…
