AmEx Savings Recurring Transfers Appearing Strange

I have several American Express Bank HYSA, which used to be partly connected, and then not connected, but are now connected it seems. However, the recurring transfers appear very, very strangely in my ledger, and I cannot figure out a way to clean them up. It's causing problems with my projected balance, as transfers from my checking account to savings both appear in credit and debit format, resulting in a net-zero balance movement in my projection. Is anyone else having this issue? Do I just need to try deleting all the recurring transactions and starting over?

Attached image is how this appears in my checking account ledger - the correct transfer should just be an outbound transfer to the HYSA (lower entry), but the inbound also appears.

Strange, but I would just delete the incorrect pending transfer so it will go away. I doubt it will come back as a cleared transaction but if it does, delete it again. Of course, cleared transactions don't affect Simplifi's calculated balance the way pending ones do.

To clarify, both the incoming and outgoing sides of the transfer are showing up in the same account register? Is this happening with transfers that you are putting into the register manually, or are these transactions downloading that way? Is the other side of the transfer also reflecting in the correct account?

hi @Coach Kristina yes, the in and out are appearing in the same account register. The proper destination account also shows an inbound, although it is also not tracking into the recurring series correctly.

Thanks for the reply. To help further clarify your situation, is this issue happening with multiple/all transfers downloading into the account, or is this the only example of this occurring? This is happening just with this particular transfer series. I can reset the connection and try deleting and recreating the series.

Thanks for the reply. To clarify after you recreated the series and reset the connection, this issue with the duplicate pending transactions downloaded again into Quicken Simplifi? Did you delete the incorrect previously downloaded transaction as well?

@Coach Jon yes that’s correct. To be clear it’s not a duplicate transaction but both sides of the transaction being placed into the same account, resulting in a net-zero balance change.

Thanks for the clarification. Can you show us how this transaction appears on your bank's website via a screenshot? I think this would be helpful in determining what is occurring here. Additionally, are these transactions affecting the account balance, or does the balance match what is shown on the bank's website?

@Coach Jon these transactions are affecting the balance as shown in simplifi, and does reflect in the graphical projection line for the account in simplifi.

I'm not entirely sure what a screenshot of the bank's side is going to do here. Both banks (sending and receiving side) show only one transaction, but simplifi is taking the receiving side's transaction (from american express) and improperly assigning it to the sending side (wells fargo) as a credit, all while also taking the sending side's transaction and properly assigning that as a debit. as a result, my transaction line for wells fargo in simplifi shows no movement.

further, i noticed today that the recurring transaction this series is supposed to belong to somehow doesn't start now for another 3 instances - i just had to re-adjust the series. It's possible that this happened while I was trying to clean up the mess of deleting various simplifi-side transactions, and trying to link/unlink them to series.

i really don't know what happened here - these series were fine up through about november 2024, and then starting december 2024 they went haywire.

Thanks for the reply. I think a screenshot would be helpful here so we can verify what the transactions are supposed to look like compared to how they appear in Quicken Simplifi. If you click into the transaction detail window for both transactions in Quicken Simplifi, does it show that they are linked to the correct recurring series?

@Coach Jon i just noticed today that things like this are happening in simplifi - a single pending transaction/reminder is getting double counted in the trend line.

@Coach Jon this is what the bank side looks like. single transactions. simplifi is doublecounting or counting both sides all in the same account.

Thank you for the screenshots! If both sides of the transaction are being downloaded into a single account, then it makes sense that the projected cash flow would show this. If you click into the transaction detail window for both transactions in Quicken Simplifi, does it show that they are linked to the correct recurring series? Can you provide a screenshot of the transaction detail window as well?

At this point the transactions themselves are correct as I had to make manual changes and corrections to get my data correct.

I see. So to clarify, the first issue you mentioned in this thread has been resolved, and now just the projected cash flow issue you shared is affecting you, correct? Or is that issue now resolved as well?

I can't tell, as the next actual instance of this transaction has not occurred yet. The underlying issue is, as far as I can tell, not resolved, but as mentioned, since the actual transaction has not occurred yet, I cannot comment on that specifically. There is this new issue of the reminder double-counting on the trendline even though there is only one reminder. Bottom line, though, this is taking a good bit of effort to correct manually and much of the automation that I rely on Simplifi for is breaking, and it's messing with my ability to keep an eye on things properly.

Thanks for the reply. I would keep an eye out for the first issue and let us know if it comes back in the future. For the projected cash flow issue, it looks like it is counting the AmEx HYSA pending transaction as well as the recurring American Express Transfer for that day. So I don't think it is necessarily double-counted. Are you able to link that recurring reminder to the AmEx HYSA transaction?
