Import transactions from CSV no longer triggering Rules

I've been using import from CSV for quite some time now and it used to trigger the application of Rules to Rename Payee, Update Category, etc.

At some point in the past few months this stopped working. Now, when I import transactions from CSV the rules don't trigger and I have to rename payees and assign categories manually.

Note: The strangest part is this feature used to work automatically!

I have been a simplifi early access user since 2021! So I've been here likely longer than most. Since I live internationally and transact in non-USD foreign currencies, 90% of my transactions are imported (after I manually make the forex adjustments to USD).

Over the years, I have accumulated 1762 rules and up until about 6 months ago, those rules were automatically applied to my imported transactions which was fantastic (and intuitive - after all, why wouldn't they!?)

In the past 6 months, for whatever reason, my rules were no longer automatically applied to my imported transactions, although they continued to work for my synced accounts (non-imported transactions).

There is also no way to manually trigger all rules to execute, instead I have to go rule-by-rule, to trigger the rule to apply to existing transactions, which is not practically with thousands of rules and thousands of imported transactions every month.

Can you please bring back (and/or apply a new feature) so that Rules automatically apply to imported transactions? (After all, why shouldn't they???)

If this used to work, then at minimum on the import process there should be a toggle switch "[*] Apply Rules?"

Thanks @Coach Natalie ! I am very glad that you have at least confirmed this is a known bug. My concern came after reaching out to a customer service representative via chat who a) refused to believe me that this used to work and b) claimed it was intentional that the rules were not applied stating that "rules are only applied to linked accounts and not to imported transactions".

Hope this bug can be resolved ASAP! 🙏

I just noticed that importing a CSV file now has a new fields (Category, Notes, Check-No) which means somebody has been in the import code recently and they are fresh with the code. It should be trivial* for them to fix this.

I have just done another bulk upload and extremely disappointed that this bug has not been addressed yet, especially given that it should NOT be a big fix (as the previous software developer has mentioned)! I know this is not Priority 1, but given that it's low hanging fruit, can this PLEASE be escalated!?

*Please note that I am one voice, but I personally represent several accounts as I have additional Simplifi paid accounts for other members of my family. Happy to share those additional account information if that helps you add some weight behind this request!

I have the same issue. Any update on a repair? Seems like something that would be easy to fix. I mean, we can do this in Excel, so in this environment it should be relatively straight forward to program (re-program). FYI, I have also put in a ticket. reference ID 515426395029657857.

What do we have to do to make somebody actually take this issue seriously?!?!?!

Every month I have to manually assign payees and categories because of this bug.

This bug is at least 4 months old now!!! It is a simple fix.

For manual accounts when importing CSV's sometimes rules are not being applied.

Example below:

Rule does not run to update “DS TORONTO HYDRO BPY/FAC” to “Toronto Hydro”

Has this been resolved? I need to import 4 months of data among multiple accounts to complete my taxes and have tediously created a lot of rules and just want them to apply to the imported transactions.

This bug should have been fixed in weeks and yet we're now approaching half a year. I'm not sure what the team is focusing on, and bugs do happen, but the delay in fixing this bug is unacceptable.

Adding to this bug, the unreliability of account totals on an ongoing basis (that magically heals overnight) and the recent account totals bug and I've lost faith in this product.

It is unlikely I'll be renewing.

Any update on when this will be fixed? I already can't import my Gemini credit card transactions automatically. The workaround for that is to import manual transactions, which I can't do until the rules apply to manual transactions. I am NOT manually categorizing each individual transaction. If I wanted to do that, I would have stayed balancing a manual checkbook…Please prioritize this asap!

One can speculate, but the simple fact is that this fix, which is essential to a number of people's workflow, is languishing somewhere, unloved and forgotten.

Your speculations are plausible (except maybe "all developers forced to use AI" 🤔), but I think you skipped over a more likely one.

Namely, this bug is ranked low priority and is in line behind a bunch of higher-ranked bugs (and features).

Hi Coach Jon, any update yet, I am waiting on 4 months of transactions with no rules applied. This is a big issue for me as I have multiple manual accounts where Quicken and my financial institution do not play well and and I'm forced to manually upload the transactions. Keep us posted.

I case anyone is tired of waiting for Simplifi (I mean honestly 😔)

Re-opening and saving each rule via the edit form forces the rules engine to re-evaluate, the script on this page automates this.

automatically does the 5 or so clicks per rule (which would be quite time consuming to be done manually on hundreds of rules. The script takes 5 minutes per 100 rules and give you a little progress indicator.

(I'm sure the delays between clicks in the script could be less but for my purposes it's fine to grab a coffee while it runs)

Combined with the other recent and ongoing bugs:

missing transaction bugs
ongoing interface crashing bugs
ongoing misreported account balance bugs that magically repair overnight

I've used Simplif for ~3 years now and in the last year or so it has become obvious that Simplifi is no longer a product to be trusted. I've undertaken the tedious task of switching to another accounting software. It's a shame, I really wanted to keep using Simplifi. I really wanted Simplifi to work. It doesn't.
