Same amount split transfers don't link to separate transactions in receiving account (edited)

Multiple splits with transfers that are the same amount do not get linked to separate transactions in the receiving account. I have two splits that are transfers to the receiving account for the same dollar amount. They both get linked to a singular transaction in the receiving account. This is obvious because when I delete the singular transaction, both splits get changed to uncategorized. A transfer should be 1 to 1. It can't be 1 to many or many to 1. The logic to connect transfers from splits that have the same dollar amount is broken. It should be checking date, amount, and whether a transfer is already linked. I don't believe the latter is happening. I have two splits linked to one transaction. That should never happen.

Is this happening in the web app, the mobile app, or both?
Is the transaction in the receiving account manually entered, imported via CSV, or downloaded from the financial institution?
Are the split transactions manually entered or imported?
How often has this happened?

This has been happening since I started using the tool. The sending account is my checking account and the receiving account is my 401k account. Both are linked. My checking account is linked to Regions and my 401k account is linked to Empower. The transactions are being pulled on both sides. I created a paystub recurring transaction that has the same net as the transaction downloaded from Regions. I add manual splits in the transaction to account for all of my pre-tax, post-tax, savings deposits, and 401k deposits. The tool cannot accurately and consistently link the transactions in the sending account with those in the receiving account. This happens for every single paycheck. I get paid weekly so I have over 25 transactions where this problem presents itself. If I try to correct one paycheck and get the connectivity fixed for it, the tool eventually goes back and undoes my changes. I corrected 8 paychecks this morning and had them connected correctly. Took me over an hour to do it. I verified each one was correct. Went back into each paycheck at the end and everyone of them was incorrect again. That's a HUGE problem. The tool simply cannot match up the split transactions where one or more splits going to a receiving account have the same dollar amount.

Not sure of this has anything to do with your predicament, but Investment accounts do not allow linking of recurring transactions. I assume your paychecks are recurring transactions. I made a feature request to allow more banking options for Investment accounts (splits, recurring transactions, etc.)

You still should be able to link the transfer parts though. I do this all the time. So when they are linked that way, they should stay linked. Of course, the investment balance won't update immediately. It takes a business day for Simplifi to download the updated balance.

I made a dummy paycheck series with a cleared transfer from Cash to my IRA.

Just a thought. I'll see if the transfer stays linked. The Paycheck shows the recurring link only for the Cash side and not for the IRA side.

You mentioned your corrections are being reverted. Is this happening every time Quicken Simplifi refreshes with the financial institution? What information is being reverted? For example, are the splits being removed entirely?

No. The transactions have never linked correctly as I've been trying to figure out the best way to handle the transfers for several weeks now. I just started using Simplifi on the 22 of May 2026. So, barely a month. I abandoned another tool because it couldn't handle splitting properly. The multi-split paycheck with multiple transfers going to the 401k account is something I just got set up in the past two weeks. It's setup that way to match the transactions in the 401k account. It's been a work in progress. I finally got everything situated the way I want it and am trying to go back and tie previous paychecks and 401k transfers (deposits) together.

When I say the corrections are being reverted, this is what is happening. I should have nine 401k transfers from my paycheck to my 401k account. One is the employer matching contribution. Four are splits of my 401k contribution. The other four are splits of my regular employer contribution. There are supposed to be nine transactions on the receiving side and nine on the sending side. It's set up with nine splits rather than just three to match the transactions on the receiving side that are pulled from Empower. Otherwise, I would just have three (employee contribution, employer match, employer regular contribution). I generally end up with seven or eight that show up as linked on the receiving side (401k account). I made all of my paychecks for May and June have the correct number of transfers to the 401k account and verified that nine transfer links showed up in the 401k account. I went back about twenty minutes later and looked at each of the paychecks again. Most were showing 7 or 8 transfer links instead of the 9 that I verified previously. I didn't do anything in the meantime, so the tool automatically adjusted those. The 401k account was not updated during that process either.

I'm attaching screenshots showing the issue. The first case is where I have 9 transfer splits on the sending side but only 8 transfers on the receiving side. The second case shows where I have 9 transfer splits on the sending side but only 7 transfers on the receiving side. Again, both paychecks had 9 split transfers matched with nine transactions in the 401k account and then somehow went back to not matching. The latter case also produces another strange phenomenon that can't be adjusted. One of the transfers shows up as a pending transaction. There's no way to "clear" that transaction. The transaction detail screen for an investment account doesn't show the status field. So, it stays stuck as "Pending".

Wow, I can see now from the detailed explanation how complicated this is. It ought to work with 9 transfer links.

Maybe one of the coaches will be able to help you keep them linked, but if all else fails, you can unlink them and just use a simple transfer category on both sides instead of linking the transfers. It works just as well for the accounting and the Spending Plan.

Or if you can get 8 to link, the 9th one can just be a transfer on each side.

For what it's worth, I often have problem with linking a transfer from checking to an investment account. I have them linked and then it downloads a duplicate in the Investment account. I have to delete the linked one I created and then rematch the checking with the now downloaded transaction in the investment account. And that's just one transfer, not 9!

They either don't match or I end up with multiple split transfers on the sending side matched to one transfer on the receiving side. That's what I believe is happening in most cases (i.e. case 2). The two $91.58 splits are matched to a singular transaction in the 401k and the two $45.79 splits are matched to a singular transaction in the 401k. That's how 9 transfers get mapped to 7 transactions. That's a tool issue since transfers should be 1 to 1. I can't explain why the two $68.68 transfers get mapped to two separate transactions in the 401k.

Your suggestion about using a transfer category might be how I have to do things for now. I get paid weekly and would like to get all of my paychecks back to January connected in a consistent manner that doesn't change. It's quite a bit of effort to go back and change the splits for 25+ paystubs.

I do wonder how the transfers are getting changed after I correct them. Makes me think that the software does some type of validation on the transfers in the background. I can't come up with any other explanation for 9 transfers to 9 transactions getting reverted back to 9 transfers to 7 transactions. If I'm bored all redo one of them and screenshot it after I "fix" the linkage. Then take another when it reverts back.

I've seen this general issue before (where two split transfers get linked to the same other side instead of creating a new one). It's definitely a bug that exists in the system since this kind of thing shouldn't be possible.

I've done a lot of fussing to get them to unlink. Spent some time with support as well. They were able to guide me through fixing the issue right then but not going forward. What I ended up doing for the one that kept happening every month (and this was my idea, not from support) is I changed the series amount so it isn't an exact match and set the matching type to Exact Match, so it wouldn't link automatically.

Here's a screen capture after I "fix" the linkage for the June 12th case above. It's still holding after about ten minutes. I will check later today and see if all nine transactions are still present. If they are, then I'm going to have consider the possibility that these transactions are somehow getting modified when I "fix" another paycheck.

I believe my issue is that I have multiple splits with the same amount. For instance, I have two $45.79 transfers, two $68.68 transfers, and two $91.58 transfers. If they are only looking at amount, payee, and date then it's easy to see how they are getting mis-linked. The issue is that transfer links should be 1 to 1. That should be the fourth check or whatever number check (i.e. is the amount the same, is the date the same, is the payee the same, do I already have a transfer link). If all of those are true then another match needs to be considered or a new manual transaction needs to be created for the transfer. It's not complicated.

My issue was also with splits with the same amount. But as you said, a transaction that's already linked as a transfer should not be linkable to another transfer, not automatically and not manually either.

You are free to send logs from any computer you are signed in to Quicken Simplifi on. Logs cannot be sent from a mobile device at this time.
