Bill reminders for (non-linked) credit card payments keep changing from $0 (edited)

I have noticed a recurring error in the last couple of weeks in Quicken Simplifi that I hope someone has a solution for.

I have created "series" as monthly reminders for my bills/payments and I set them as $0.00 on the payment dates. I did this on purpose so I would see when a bill due date is coming, check the balance due, make the payment. If and when I make a payment I would adjust the $0.00 payment to the amount I paid and link it to the actual transaction once it clears. This has worked well for years. Lately all of my reminders for the next month are now showing up as "income" in a positive amount of $4,902.45 (each is the same) so it makes it look like my billers are adding money to my checking account which is not the case.

If I view the series for any of these they still look correct…accounts, $0.00, monthly recurrence, etc. It is only when they show up across the row on the "Transactions" view where the reminders are. If I scroll across, it looks like all the credit card "reminders" are saying I am receiving $4,902.45 instead of the $0.00 placeholder I have it set to.

One more point, I went through and manually edited each reminder to $0.00 to fix the displayed balance of my checking account and a day later they are all back to displaying that same incorrect inflated amount.

I searched in my transaction history and do not have any historical transactions that match that $4,902.45 amount if that is helpful information.

Hope someone can help or at least has a similar problem so I know I am not a one off!

It has probably been this way over the last 3 - 4 weeks but I am not certain. This is happening with USAA, CapitalOne, Chase, Barclays and on multiple accounts with these banks….it appears to be all of my Credit Card payment series/reminders that I use for monthly placeholders. Yes, all of these billers are connected to their respective banks and are normally syncing transactions. All of these accounts have been functioning for a couple of years without this issue.

Not sure if I mentioned it but I can "edit reminder" and change it back to $0.00 for each of them but the next day when I check Simplifi again they all return back to a +$4,902.45 in the reminder and inflate the Checking account's "Projected Cash Flow" graph at the top of the account's transactions view.

I used Quicken (desktop/classic) for many years and have been using Simplifi for probably 4 - 5 years and am tech savvy so I think I have troubleshooted everything I can do from my end.

You could try disconnecting the billers (not disconnecting the accounts, just the "Bill Connect") and setting the amounts back to $0.00 again.

If they don't change again after a day or so, then the problem is likely with the Bill Connect system.

I had considered that but logically didn't think that would produce the same error across different banks with separate connections. But, it is a great idea and I will give it a try…probably just a couple of the ones we don't use to compare.

Do you think only disconnecting a couple could isolate that issue or do you think I would need to disconnect all to test it completely?

Hello @Coach Kristina and others…I found some additional details I hadn't noticed before when I was getting ready to try @DryHeat recommendation. The statement balance on the Chase card is the exact $4,902.45 amount that is populating on all of the other accounts (variety of banks…not just Chase) series/reminders. Obviously those wires should not be crossing nor should it be coming across as a +$4,902.45 amount even if it was supposed to.

Does this help with the troubleshooting?

Any suggestions on how to fix it? Cache clear or something? I feel like this can only be due to something happening on the backend.

Ah, thanks @Coach Kristina and @DryHeat - I was reading "Bill Connect" and confusing that with the regular connection and linking of accounts to their banking institution.

I hadn't explored "Bill Connect" yet and I looked to confirm that none of my existing bill series/reminders are using it so they all just look like this screenshot below. If I haven't set-up "Bill Connect" on any of my accounts in the past does this narrow down the cause of the issue? I was assuming you meant the live transaction link/download feature…

Here you go….like this? Here you can see the USAA, Capital One x 2, and Barclay's accounts (if I scrolled more to the right you would see one from Chase as well. Normally these are all set at $0.00 as a reminder for me that they may be due. I check the account and if they are still zero balance I dismiss the reminder for the month. You can see they are all $4,902.45 but when I go in to view the series they are still showing the normal $0.00 recurring the way I set them up.

I also included the graph Projected Cash Flow line so you can see where they are all adding cash to this Checking account balance incorrectly. I set all the reminders to Zero manually this morning and it fixes the graph but now later in the afternoon they are all back again.

To clarify, are the series in question for credit card payments? If so, what category is the series assigned to? I ask because recurring linked credit card payment series, which are set up for a payment account (like a checking account) with the receiving credit card account set as the "category" for the series, will show a Bill Connect toggle instead of the "Connect biller" screen you sent a screenshot of above.

I noticed you're specifically mentioning credit cards, and since Bill Connect for Credit Cards is designed to override default amounts in recurring credit card payment reminders, we want to ensure we fully understand your setup. Can you provide screenshots of the Basic Details tab and the Bill Connect tab for one of the recurring credit card series, so we can see your full setup, please?

Yes @Coach Natalie, these are all for credit cards but we have ours set up different (which may or may not be contributing…it has been this way for a long time and worked). We have a "Category" called "Credit Card Payments" that is in the series like this screenshot and that gives us the Connect Billing screen I shared earlier. As an experiment I briefly changed the category to the "Transfer:Credit Card Account" instead and could see where changed to the "Bill Connect" toggle and even noticed it added the little green check mark badge to the reminder in the row above the transactions. I put it back to the way I had it for now so we don't end up chasing things I change on my end.

Normally, I see these reminders with "Credit Card Payment" as the series reminder to warn me something is coming due and then when I pay it I add the transaction manually and tell it to link to my series/reminder.

Is that information helpful? Thoughts?

I will try that….any thoughts/opinions on setting them up the way I had them as "Credit Card Payment" categories vs as a transfer to the corresponding credit card account as the category? I guess if I want to try the Bill Connect feature I would need to use the account for the category.

@Michael.Benton, it's entirely up to you what works best for your setup. Yes, to use Bill Connect for Credit Cards, you must use a linked transfer.

For this feature to work, both the source account and the credit card account used for the payment must be connected in Quicken Simplifi to their respective financial institutions, as some required data is obtained through those connections.
The credit card bill must be set as a Recurring Transaction Series.
Verify that the Recurring Transaction Series is set up as a linked transfer. In this setup, select the source account (e.g., your checking account) in the Select Account field, and select the receiving credit card account in the Category field.
