Help with splitting a maturing CD transaction (edited)

My CD matured and the principal, plus interest, was dropped in Savings.

I'm trying to split the Category between "CD Investment" and "CD Interest earned".

Example: Starting out with $10,857 deposited. In "split transaction", split 1, I have entered the original $10k. When I do that the "Left to Split" doubles to $20k. ?? Adding split 2 "Add Left To Split" increases the Left To Split again. Makes no sense.

Should I be changing the Plus (+) to a Minus (-) in the original amount? BUT, when I do that the 2nd split becomes a Minus (-) negative $857. If I make it a Plus, the Left To Split doubles the 2nd SPLIT.

Hello @neon45,

Thank you for reaching out! Based on your description, it sounds like the sign (+ or -) is incorrect. Is the total amount positive or negative? If it's positive, then the split categories should be positive also.

If they're negative, the Left To Split will increase instead of decrease.

Note: The main amount defaults to negative. The Split categories default to + for income and - for expenses.

Thanks! Your positive example is exactly how I expected the software to perform. Mine doesn't.

When I did exactly as you have shown, Split 2 came up with double the "original Balance," plus the interest. 🤔

I used the program's ADD LEFT TO SPLIT feature. So Split 2 now shows $20,857, and the Left To Split is $0.00.

Thanks for providing the additional screenshots. We'd like to better understand the transaction and the split you're trying to create before determining what may be causing the unexpected calculation.

Could you please provide the following details?

What is the total amount of the transaction?
Is the transaction supposed to be positive or negative?
What categories are you using for each split? is there any specific configuration in this Categories? (A screenshot would be perfect here)
What should the final split amounts represent? For example, how much is the CD principal and how much is the interest?

If you'd prefer not to post those details publicly, you're welcome to send them via DM instead.

Once we have those specifics, we can better understand how this CD transaction is supposed to be handled and determine whether the behavior you're seeing is expected or if there's something else going on.

Thanks for sending the DM with more details -- that was really helpful! Using the example amounts from your initial post in this thread.

Since the entire transaction is a deposit of $10,857.00, the transaction amount should be entered as +$10,857.00.

From there, the amount representing the original CD investment being returned should also be entered as a positive amount: +$10,000.00. The remaining $857.00 represents the interest earned, so that split should be entered as +$857.00.

The two splits should therefore add up to the total transaction:

+$10,000.00 — CD Investment
+$857.00 — CD Interest Earned
Total: +$10,857.00

Once the two positive split amounts equal the total transaction amount, Left to Split should show $0.00. The completed transaction should look like this:

So, in this example, there shouldn't be any negative amounts in the transaction or either of the splits.

Thanks, that worked. The only difference that made it work was the order of the SPLIT.

Instead of entering the CD Investment in Split 1, in your example, it was entered in Split 2. This is SOOOOOO Bizarre. If the numbers are not put in in the correct sequence you get the examples I sent.

I can still duplicate the screen shots showing $80,3431.01 if I don't enter them exactly as you did. Did you try entering the amounts in as shown in my screen shots? Did you get the same output I did?
