The decision to lock the cost basis for some investment accounts if its provided by the institution was not a good product decision. Please reconsider this. Here are a few suggestions which are better than the current behavior:
- Always allow the cost basis to be editable like it used to be. This worked great and the UI tooltips still imply that cost basis can be modified for any investment account.
- If the institution supplies a cost basis, consider it authoritative and accurate. Today some of my accounts show "insufficient data" with the guidance to update the cost basis. This is not possible. Also the cost basis is accurate. I have no idea why the insuffient data warning is appearing but it means gains cannot be calculated.
- Lock the cost basis but ask me to confirm its accurate to dismiss the insufficient data warning. If its not accurate then provide troubleshooting steps to resolve the error.
I assume there must be some kind of logic that has a threshold for what is "accurate". This is fine, but there must be a way for the user to resolve it. If not, thats just poor UX.
