+2 from us on this! We are just getting into the spending plan part of this app, and the tags would make this usable for us.
I 100% percent agree. I’m surprised this feature is not already implemented. I love the app but I am surprised I can’t track spending based on a tag.
I don’t want to have to make a category for allowances or events; doing so reduces the resolution at which I track my spending.
I want to be able to track family spending in the spending plan; set for example 500 dollars a month for an allowance, and then have transactions be added based on a tag.
This would allow me to have an allowance for my child for example and still track the categories they spent on.
@lost_references mentioned a wedding example, this is a great example. This is the only feature missing for me to 100% replace EveryDollar, I find the 0 based budget essential - I want to assign and track every penny I spend.
Please devs add this!! As a developer myself I don’t think it can be that hard?
Also I want to compliment the app it’s beautiful! I believe it’s built with React Native right?
YES PLEASE! Need this, for some things I want the granularity but I also want to make a few with a bunch lumped in
Please add the ability to select multiple categories in Spending Plan within the Planned Spending group
This will be nice to have in the spending plan to track vacation expenses with a vacation tag that fall into multiple categories.
It's not something I am likely to use (I only use two different tags), but it's this would be valuable to others so I upvoted it.
I'd like the ability to create a tag for Planned Spending items.
My use case is that I have Planned Spending items for things like Entertainment and Alcohol. I know that these are (almost) always going to get a specific tag ("Discretionary" in these cases).
If this were done, then it would also be possible to include Planned Spending items in the "Projected" field in Watchlists (this is assuming that field gets updated to actually include what is scheduled - and in this case, planned - to be spent in the Spending Plan).
I might vote for this, but in terms of reserving money in planned spending, if there were an entertainment category reserved and a discretionary tag reserved, which one (in your mind) would be assigned the expense first? i.e. You wouldn't want an expense to count twice.
Oops, I just saw I had already voted for the original idea on this (thanks @UrsulaA for posting the link to the soon to be merged topic)
Good news! This idea post already exists with 21 votes. Vote for it below.

LOL, I voted for this just last month. Are the coaches sure they want me as a super user?
Please make this happen! The tags allow another layer of control and analysis that just using categories lacks. Thank you!
The planned spending works great for items based on category, however, there are some budget items I wish I could track based on tag. For example, my wife and I have separate monthly budgets. I'd like that spending to be accounted for in "Planned Spending" with rollover. Currently I have a special category for each of us to use for our spending; however, I'd prefer not to lose the actual category of the transaction for analytics reasons. Additionally, the automatic rules make this pretty cumbersome.
Watchlists almost work for this workflow, but they don't show up in planned spending or have a rollover balance feature.
either by tag or allow for multiple categories without splitting
Please make this happen!
This will be useful.
3.5 years later this obviously valuable feature isn’t implemented yet. Why? [removed user tag]
Spending Plan is worthless to me as a tracking tool until this feature request is implemented. Until then, I will continue to use watchlists for my monthly spending tracking. This would be an amazing add, and I'm surprised it hasn't been added already, given this thread is over three years old…
We’ve just had a need for this come up. It lets us plan for a group of categories while still knowing the breakdown of each category.
It’s frustrating that such a feature, which should be very easy to implement, has still not been acknowledged. Please get this on the roadmap.
I'm not sure I understand how this would work.
About a year ago @RobWilk raised a question. What would happen if, for example:
Could someone who is in favor of this idea flesh out the suggestion a little more?
please implement this request. The planning would be perfect (even though goals are not connected but incoming transfers from savings do the trick to see available to spend accurately)
Ability to choose whether to use category or tag is crucial. The vacation is one of those spending groups. My current pain:
I have 3 destinations coming up, one after another. They all share the same travel categories: hotels, car rentals, airline tickets. I am prebooking everything in advance at once. But I can’t see how much budget I have left for each of these destinations. I have to manually pre estimate everything, combine it into one bucket of travel and keep adjusting spending planned expense if I end up booking more things for one of the destinations. With tags I could define:
Travel + tag 1 = $1000
Travel + tag 2 = $5000
Travel + tag 3 = $6000
@vershova22
I agree that it would be great to be able to use Tags to create planned spending items.
How would you suggest Simplifi handle the double-counting problem I mentioned in the post right before yours? For example, would having Tags control over Categories work for you?
(Meaning that if an expense is pulled into a Planned Spending item based on a Tag, it is then ignored by other Planned Spending items even if it matches their Category.)
BTW, there may also be a problem if an expense has multiple Tags that are in different Planned Spending items, but I don't have an idea for dealing with that.
I would handle that but requiring both a category and a tag selection. Under Category, add an option for "All/Any Category" for when you only care about the tag.
Unger Tags, have options for "Any Tag", "Not Tag" and a way to exclude tags.
