Chase - Same old balance/weekend issues, revisited

RobWilk
RobWilk Superuser ✭✭✭✭✭

In light of the new information about the 11/11 alert and revisiting the Chase balances being wrong on the weekend, I think the biggest problem I can now understand is due to this:

(Yes, checking has a low balance, but it's almost payday, and savings are in good shape if I need to dip in)

The -$14.40 is the problem.

Wait, weird, while I was writing this, it changed:

This time THAT amount matches my pending entry:

... but like the other financial institution problems (11/11 alert), it is subtracting my manual pending transaction and additionally double-counting the amount in the top right (2nd image above).

The balance at the bank (which is up to date) is:

This illustrates that the amount it subtracts from that upper right corner pop-up pending amount is being incorrectly subtracted twice.

@Coach Kristina I totally understand you're usually here on the weekend, but this might not get handled until the regular coaches get back on Monday. Don't feel pressured to address this. However, this is the kind of problem that mainly shows on weekends at Chase. If you have questions you want me to research while it's broken, on Monday, it will be fine again.

IMHO, The balance from Chase it's basing everything on "includes" pending transactions (it is the "available balance")… The bank actually has more pending transactions than -my- $7.20 manual entry (for example, the bank has a $25.05 planet fitness monthly payment pending which didn't downwload yet), so Simplifi is grabbing that $7.20 number (or, briefly, $14.40) strictly from my manually entered transactions. The only question is why doesn't it know enough not to deduct my own amount twice? I guess (?) it just doesn't know that was already deducted from the bank balance and maybe that's why (edited).

The Chase issue remains the same. I thought I understood it as something different, but I was wrong.

I think, understanding that the "Pending" amount on the top right comes from unmatched transactions in my register (as opposed to from the bank), the same Chase issue exists as it was understood earlier. I misunderstood where that top-right "Pending" hold comes from. So, here, the bank has already deducted the pending, and then Simplifi has additionally deducted my pending, resulting in the double pending deduction.

EDIT: This new understanding of where pending on the top right comes from will be useful for me in understanding the 'other' issue affecting Multiple FIs from the 11/11 alert.

.. I'm not sure about this, but: Since Chase charges (unclear about credits) are always included in the balance downloaded from the bank, it "might" be safe to manually "clear" the transactions you know affect the bank balance so they don't affect the balance in Simplifi.

I don't see how that would help me since the issue I've seen is with transactions that have already cleared (maybe not the weekend issue then). I had it yesterday with credits (direct deposits) and may other times with payments.

Your issue reported yesterday is definitely the other issue. You're possibly dealing with both issues at different times with Chase.

I have a feeling I'll only find out if I'm dealing with both once one of them gets fixed! They are so intertwined.

    Hello @RobWilk & @EL1234,

If you haven't already done so, I recommend that you start troubleshooting this issue by making the affected account(s) manual, then reconnect and relink the account(s) and monitor to see if the behavior persists. If the behavior does persist, does it self correct 4-6 hours later, or does it correct only after the weekend, when the pending transaction clears on Chase's end? @RobWilk Just to confirm: Does the transaction in your screenshot from yesterday show as pending on Chase's website?

I look forward to your response!

Hi, thanks for your response! I'm not sure which thread it was discussed in but I definitely went through all those steps. It fixed the issue for right then but not going forward, within a day or two I had the same problem again.

    Edit: found it! https://community.simplifimoney.com/discussion/comment/42925#Comment_42925

And I've seen this a lot even when Chase's website doesn't show any pending transactions, and the only pending transactions in Simplifi are a few that I created myself (for checks that I gave people which weren't deposited yet). When the issue shows up, it's counting one or more "cleared" transactions in the pending tooltip as well. A few hours later it fixes itself, even over the weekend.

Thank you for your replies @EL1234,

I can see in that other thread that you already messaged @Coach Natalie the information needed to add you to the ticket for the issue you're describing.

Do you also encounter the issue @RobWilk described, where it's wrong over the weekend, then self-corrects on Monday?

    Thank you!

    Correct!

I don't think I've seen that specific scenario, at least not recently. My balance was wrong last night but then by this morning (still weekend) it had fixed itself.

For the record, my savings account in Simplifi is showing about $500 less than it actually is as a result of this. Perhaps because of a savings goal display, I don't have the "i" to click on to see pending transactions in savings.

It is odd that @EL1234 balance fixed itself on a weekend. Something is different, whether it's at Chase or in Simplifi. Is it possible there is more than one chase connector (i.e. intuit, plaid, fincity) and I'm on the wrong one? EDIT: It's also possible they didn't manually enter transactions, in which case the balance should be right every 4-6 hours.

I don't think my issue was due to transactions clearing/linking to manual ones on the weekend itself, so maybe that's the reason?

  • RobWilk
    RobWilk Superuser ✭✭✭✭✭

Yeah, that would explain it. I was hoping there was another reason (that could be fixed). I know I could just wait and not manually enter transactions, it would be "easier", it would cause less problems, it's just a habit i have to change i guess.

Thank you for your replies @RobWilk,

When I check on our end, you're not using a different aggregator.

If I'm understanding correctly, this issue is happening exclusively with Chase during the weekend, and seems to be triggered by having one or more pending transactions manually documented in your account register in Quicken Simplifi?

    Thank you!

    -Coach Kristina

  • EL1234
    EL1234 Member ✭✭✭✭

But I do have a few pending transactions manually documented in Simplifi. They just haven't shown up on Chase's side yet. Maybe the weekend issue only shows up when those transactions show up in Chase over the weekend?

  • RobWilk
    RobWilk Superuser ✭✭✭✭✭

@Coach Kristina Yes. What I did for tonight, I took the non-chase side of the transfer and changed it to a non-linked transfer, this removed the Chase side of those payments. The Chase to Chase account transfers I just deleted (and now at least the balance is right).

    Rob Wilkens

  • RobWilk

Yes, @EL1234 IT's when they're reflected in the Chase balance and included as manual transactions.

At this point, my only chase transactions are transfers, withdrawals/deposits, and bill payments, no charges. All of these affect the chase website balance instantly, so if I enter them the problem shows for me.

"it's when they're reflected in the Chase balance and included as manual transactions."

    → got it!

"At this point, my only chase transactions are transfers, withdrawals/deposits, and bill payments, no charges. All of these affect the chase website balance instantly, so if I enter them the problem shows for me."

→ This part I don't understand. If you manually enter a bill payment as pending, it'll subtract from your balance in simplifi since that amount will be included in "Balance with pending". Isn't that what it's supposed to do?

  • RobWilk
    RobWilk Superuser ✭✭✭✭✭

It will subtract from the BANK balance, not the Simplifi balance, once it syncs… The base simplifi balance will be the bank balance (which updates on weekends) which includes pending, but chase on weekends will not download transactions, so this means, it will be subtracting my manual pending charges from the bank balance which already factors in those pending charges.

I thought you meant that if you enter a pending transaction manually it instantly causes the balance to be incorrect. Seems to me that the issue is only if one of those transactions shows up at Chase over the weekend - in which case it's double counted until after the weekend. Do I have it correct now?

  • RobWilk
    RobWilk Superuser ✭✭✭✭✭

    Yes, you have it correct.

@RobWilk, thanks for bringing this back up!

Since the issue covered by the Alert you shared is new (users are reporting changed behavior in the last 3 or 4 weeks), we wouldn't want to revisit this as part of that issue. I believe the balance issue you are reporting here was thoroughly researched in the past and Chase decided that they were not willing to make a change. I'm afraid that that would still stand.

However, it's possible that these new issues will bring light to the more long-term issue you've experienced, as I know we have some Chase users that have been escalated for the new issue, such as the user here. Fingers crossed!

Otherwise, I hope this makes sense. Sorry for not having better news!
