MidwestOne Bank Pending Transactions - Counted as the opposite type in "Bank Balance"
I can't tell if this is a bug, or if I'm just doing something wrong in Quicken Simplifi.
I use MidwestOne Bank for checking. If I use the Balance Type "Balance with Pending", Simplifi shows my checking balance as the balance without adding/subtracting any pending transactions. This value matches what my MidwestOne online banking shows as "Current Balance".
I would like Simplifi to show my checking balance as the "Current Balance" plus or minus any pending transactions.
My understanding is that to accomplish that I should be using the Balance Type "Bank Balance". I have tried changing the type to "Bank Balance" and waiting a day for a refresh. When I do, and I have pending transactions, it appears to credit/debit the balance in the opposite way it should.
For instance, lets say my current checking balance (what my bank shows as current balance - the account's balance with no pending transactions figured in) is $1,000. I have deposited as $200 check into my checking account. In both Simplifi and my online banking I see a pending transaction of +$200. Meaning that my balance including that check is $1,200. When Simplifi is set to "Bank Balance" it does not show my checking balance as $1,200. It instead shows it as $800. Once the check's transaction moves from Pending to Posted Simplifi shows the correct balance of $1,200. If I instead use Balance Type "Balance with Pending" the checking balance stays at $1,000 until the transactions posts, and then shows as $1,200.
If the pending transaction is the opposite type, lets say I used my debit card to purchase $300 of something, while that transaction is pending Simplifi would show my account balance as $1,300. Once that purchase transaction clears, it would show my balance as $700.
Is there some way I'm missing to get Simplifi to treat pending checking account credits and debits correctly? Thank you

Hello @y0xn9xds,
Thank you for reaching out! To help troubleshoot, please provide more information. Do you have more than one account connected to this financial institution? If you do, are all accounts with this financial institution behaving this way, or is this impacting only one account? Have you tested to see if this behavior is happening with other accounts that are connected to other financial institutions? Are you seeing this happen in the Web app, the Mobile app, or both?
I look forward to your response!

Hello,
I do have a "Line of Credit" account with the same institution, but I do not use that enough to know if it has the same issue or not.
I also have Chase and Citi accounts connected to Simplifi, and they both accurately reflect the balance when using "Balance with Pending". Only this MidwestOne checking account applies the opposite of the desired value to the balance.
I have noticed this behavior on both the mobile and web apps.1 -
@y0xn9xds, thanks for the reply!
To clarify how balances work for connected accounts in Quicken Simplifi, here is the expected behavior:
- Most banks send in a balance that does NOT include pending transactions
- If the "Balance with pending" option is used in Quicken Simplifi, this means the program will then count any transactions in a 'pending' state toward the balance provided by the bank
- If the "Bank balance" option is used, pending transactions will not impact the balance in Quicken Simplifi
- If the bank provides a balance that DOES include pending transactions, you would want to use "Bank balance" in Quicken Simplifi so any 'pending' transactions in the program are not double-counted.
There are also two areas to set balance options in Quicken Simplifi — one for the Accounts List, which is supposed to apply to all accounts, and one in Settings > Accounts for each individual account. I would see if perhaps these settings are different in the different locations, as they could be clashing with each other. The following steps will go over how to check each location:
Also, just in case the issue applies to the connection with the bank itself, I would recommend establishing a completely fresh connection:
- Make all of the accounts with this bank manual by following the steps here.
- Once you see the account(s) listed in the Manual Accounts section under Settings > Accounts, go back through the Add Account flow to reconnect to the bank.
- If the connection is successful, carefully link the account(s) found to your existing Quicken Simplifi account(s) by following the steps here.
Let us know what you discover!
