Yes, the existing spending report is probably the more useful spending report. I would not be at all surprised if this is not a popular idea and gets rejected.
But as someone who has 'more transactions' when I'm financially unhealthy, I have an idea for a report (yes, this one), where the number of spending transactions per month is charted, along with a line showing average transactions per month for the chart period (i.e. year).
I can get this information as-is by running a spending report for each month, then "select all" transactions for that report, and get the number of transactions selected. For me, this would eliminate that manual work, calculate the averages, and plot them for me.
