NOT REALLY NEW: Chase bank balance includes pending transactions

IF they could've fixed this one (below), they would've resolved the Chase Weekend Balance issues 2-3 years ago. The Chase Weekend issue usually involves the Chase Balance Updating on the weekend (because they include pending transactions, as stated in the alert) meanwhile transactions were not downloading.

I am encouraged that they think they can fix this, this would be half the current problem with Chase balances.

    I share your frustration.

Simplifi can't get things right with BofA either.

I turned off the renewal of my Quicken Classic subscription (which expires in 2 days) with hopes the Simplifi can get their stuff together.

After this mornings Simplifi update, I turned my Quicken Classic renewal back on.

I haven't used Quicken Classic for almost 5 years, but I did it today. I told @SRC54 I was thinking about it yesterday, they also use Classic.

    I now have:

I believe I'm allowed to mention that product, as it's the same company.

It appeared to be thanksgiving prices.

I am -not- leaving Quicken Simplifi, it is still my preferred platform, and I think it will work right eventually again…

EDIT: One negative: Quicken Classic doesn't seem to support Apple Wallet.

There are features that are in QS that I wish QC had, but the best thing that QC has going for it is that it works. Every time.

Simplifi isn't yet quite as wrong as it will be at next sync, but as a comparison, Simplifi is currently showing a balance that is around $10 less than it should be, while Classic is showing the exact balance at the bank. I just dread in Classic where I'm going to have to do reconciles in the future.

I cannot access the Quicken Classic Forums, but I have some questions I would like to ask there that I am avoiding asking here for fear of being off topic. For example, I see some reports in Quicken Classic Moblie app that the desktop (mac) app doesn't seem to have (without creating a custom report maybe).

I thought the issue we're dealing with is that transactions that are no longer pending are considered pending and thus double counted.

  • RobWilk
    RobWilk Superuser ✭✭✭✭✭

That is the issue, I think it's possible the issues i had today (Thursday) were unrelated because today it would be outside of banking hours (bank holiday) so there's a separate issue complicating things. However, QC is giving me the right balance because it uses transactions to calculate a running balance.

I just came across the QC app (thanks to a direct message referral to that) and it looks a lot like Simplifi, but might work better. I am not giving up on Simplifi yet, but time will tell.

I guess let's see what happens!

Okay so now my Chase checking account balance is completely wrong, but in a different way!

What it seems to be doing is taking the balance without pending from Chase, and then subtracting my manual pending transactions (payments) in Simplifi. However it is not calculating two pending transactions which downloaded from chase, even though it should. Since a rather large income transaction came in overnight, this throws my cash flow way projection way underwater (this income is a recurring transaction, so my cash flow calculated it correctly yesterday aka until the pending transaction showed up).

I will give @Coach Natalie the info requested in the other thread, here:

@Coach Natalie Is there a remote possibility that this has been corrected now? I ask because AT THIS MOMENT both QUICKEN CLASSIC and QUICKEN SIMPLIFI match the balances on all the accounts, and, yes, it did just download 2 fresh pending transactions (meaning I didn't have to wait for next sync for balance to be right). This might be excellent news.

If the account in Classic is connected, you can tell it to Reconcile automatically and it will do so with each day's update. It works pretty well. And then you don't have to do the long monthly reconciliation.

Well, if your problem was like the one I had with Chase (I know you've had several), it will be off for a few hours once those pending transactions cleared. So you won't really know for a couple of more days if it is fixed. But I haven't used Chase in a couple of weeks.

Did you just sync, or was your last sync several hours ago? Mine is spot on at the moment, but it synced probably around 2PMi ET. Would love if this held up. In fairness, prior to this sync, I don't think I had any manual transactions, but I do now, so that may play a part in whether it's right or not.

how would I know when it synced?

  • RobWilk
    RobWilk Superuser ✭✭✭✭✭

@EL1234 Unsure, when it syncs for me there's usually a longer period where the refresh button circles, plus if there were new transactions, they download.

It definitely has new transactions after the first sync of the day but I believe that's separate from a balance sync, right?

  • EL1234
    EL1234 Member ✭✭✭✭

I would guess that it synced twice today but I can't say for sure.

  • RobWilk
    RobWilk Superuser ✭✭✭✭✭

@EL1234 I think (don't know) that they sync at the same time.

Does your pending transactions tooltip match the total of your pending transactions in simplifi? Mine doesn't.

  • RobWilk
    RobWilk Superuser ✭✭✭✭✭

    It's showing:

    Pending transactions are:

which seems to add up right, but it seems it's deducting that number from the right balance giving me a right final balance.

nice! Mine is showing the wrong number and if you deduct that number from Chase's balance before pending transactions, you get the balance that simplifi shows. Same old same old.

  • RobWilk
    RobWilk Superuser ✭✭✭✭✭

BTW, just to illustrate based on above transactions, this matches what should be in the bank.

    Chase website shows:

Which is exactly $25 off the quicken balance, and if you look there is a $25 apple card transaction which is done from Apple's (GS) side that hasn't reached the bank yet, so Simplifi is perfect at the moment.

On my end, the tooltip is missing the 3 pending transactions which came in today (after the first refresh)

Next sync about 6:45pm ET - New pending transactions downloaded, matched manual transactions, balance is still perfect. I have hopes that this might be corrected for Chase at least.

Simplifi updated but my balance is still wrong :(

See here for details (posted in the chase thread since it's a chase account)
