Will putting a Tag value in a CSV import file create a new Tag in Simplifi?

Simplifi doesn't import Categories, so I want to Tag transactions in my CSV file to make it easier to categorize them after they are imported.

QUESTION: Do the Tags I use in the CSV file have to already exist in Simplifi? Or will it create new Tags on the fly as it imports the tagged transactions.

Thanks… But I have a question about needed the "exact same column headers in the exact same order" part.

Does that mean I have to remove all the other columns from the CSV file, so that there are only Date, Payee, Amount, and Tags?

I ask because other CSV import processes I have used ignore excess columns (and column order, for that matter).

    Hello @DryHeat.

Yes, be sure to make sure that your CSV file has these properties:

    • Your headers should be labeled as Date, Payee, Amount, and Tags.
    • All of your transactions should have a date, payee, and amount. Leaving empty fields can lead to issues.
    • Dates need to be entered as M/D/YYYY (i.e., 1/1/2022).
    • Negative transactions need to have a negative sign (-) in front of the amount of the transaction, or the transactions will be imported as positive transactions.

Downloading the CSV template in the article I provided should provide a good example. I hope this helps!

@DryHeat I use the template provided and copy and paste the data from my original Excel data file instead of editing (including deleting extraneous data) the original csv file. I haven't imported tags since the only data I've imported into QS via csv didn't have any tag data. I left the tag column empty with the header intact.

@UrsulaA has a lot of experience with importing data so she may chime in with her own experiences.

Importing tags using a csv file will create new tags if such tags do not exist in Simplifi.

That’s interesting. I didn’t know about the import tags trick. Thanks @DryHeat for a good question.
