Include actual spent from Planned Spending into the left over amount.

I've been using Simplify for years now. I just noticed today that in the spending plan left over section, the sum only includes what you planned for and not the actual amount spent. I've been going off of that amount to see if i am keeping to my overall budget or not. I was pretty frustrating when i came to find that Planned spending is included in the sum but only what you planned for. so if you go over (which my utility bills and groceries came in high for the month) the left over amount only includes what you planned not the actual total of what you spent in those categories. My wife uses this to see what we have remaining for fixes or other stuff. We went from being under budget by 200 to being over budget by 50 when i included what we over spent on utilities and groceries. Now our weekend plans are canceled. I'm not sure i can trust the other features now. bummer…. it would be great to have actual vs planned along with paid, upcoming, etc.

@Moralessalsidoj, thanks for posting your suggestion to the Community!

I have converted this to a discussion, as Planned Spend expenses are already designed to use the actual spent amount when overspent. I confirmed this by adding my planned amounts to my overspent amounts, and the total for Planned Spend matches.

The amounts in the left panel (Income, Bills, Planned Spend, etc.) are used to calculate the "leftover" amount. I confirmed this by adding my left-hand panel totals.

Now, if a Planned Spend expense is underspent, the Planned Spend total will use the planned amount versus the spent amount. Is this perhaps what you're seeing?

Im not sure what version you have @Coach Natalie since your version actually shows the amount over spent and mine doesn't. but here are my calculations. I am also a beta tester which may or may not matter in this case.

I can see that rollover is enabled for your Planned Spend expenses. According to our help article, Planned Spend expenses with rollover enabled will always use the target amount, as any over- or underspent amounts will be rolled into the next month. With that, we already have an existing request for using the actual spent amount instead of the planned amount for rollover expenses. Please be sure to add your vote and feedback there, and then follow it for updates.

In your image, the Planned Spend series that are overspent are marked as "rollover."

Overspending that is "rolled over" in July is moved to the next month and calculated in the Planned Spend for August. (See the article linked below.)

If you want the overspending to be reflected in the month where it happens, you have to change the Planned Spend series so that it doesn't roll over.

Planned Spend series with Rollover enabled will use the targeted amount when calculating your Spending Plan totals so that the Available amount of your Spending Plan isn’t impacted.

I did not know that. thank you for pointing it out. I feel like it should work with roll overs as well I dont know why it wouldnt.

To clarify, the behavior I described above applies to rollover-enabled expenses, and it's because any over- or underspent amounts will be rolled into the next month.
