I can't be the only one experiencing this… whenever I am entering dollar amounts in a transaction, the data entry is HORRIBLE.

The delete key doesn't work. Backspace doesn't work right. When I type digits they don't always appear where my cursor is. If I try to shift+select to erase the entry it doesn't work. It is so mind-bogglingly terrible that either my machine is incredibly unique, or I'm doing something drastically wrong that nobody else has ever complained about this!

Here is an example gif where I am trying to enter "1745.91" but I mistype and then am trying desperately to fix it using normal keyboard entry like any other program.

BTW this has been going on for months or maybe even years - I have just grown used to it since 99+% of my transactions are imported, I just finally decided it was time to ask why a basic thing goes unresolved..

Here is attempt to catalog the exact behavior issues in the Amount field (both on transaction and on split amount entry):

Backspace seems to jump left 1 character then delete, instead of deleting the character at your cursor.
If you click on the amount from another field, it is fully highlighted, but if you hit backspace it only deletes the last character - normally when something highlighted is deleted, it would all delete.
Delete key doesn't work at all - I don't understand any sensible reason why it shouldn't be allowed to work.
Shift+Home and Shift+End do nothing - these are my most natural key presses to quickly highlight and erase contents of a field.
Home and End do nothing - these are my most natural key presses to jump to beginning or end of a field.

EDIT: Doing a bit more testing. Some of these issues do seem to be unique to FireFox (#1, #2). But the remaining items (#3, #4, #5) I see also replicate in MS Edge. So maybe FireFox is exacerbating the issues here, but still seems like some effort could go into improving this since it's very base and very core to the product experience.

As a 20 year veteran of web development myself… my suspicion is this is an attempt to make a field that enforces only entry of valid characters for amounts (digits, period, comma) but it is very poorly implemented. Having myself written JavaScript to enforce data entry on numeric fields, I know it is possible to do much, much better and so I question why on earth this has been this way for so long??

Unfortunately, I don't have Firefox to test this with. I use Quicken Simplifi in Chrome and am not experiencing any of the issues you mentioned.

Using Delete deletes the most recent character (I am on a Mac keyboard where Delete is the equivalent of Backspace).
Highlighting the full amount and pressing Delete on my Mac keyboard deletes the entire amount.
Using the Delete key on my Mac keyboard deletes characters as expected.
This sounds like a keyboard shortcut that is likely not offered in Quicken Simplifi.

I use Chrome on Windows. My results are different from yours on 1 and 2, but the same on 3, 4, and 5.

I use Chrome on Windows. The delete key provides different functionality than the backspace key - delete will delete the character after the cursor, and backspace removes the character before it.

Interestingly enough, I just tried Delete in the search box and it seems to work perfectly fine, as does Backspace. @mellamokb are you using Early Access mode? I wonder if some of the recent updates fixed this. I also see that it now lets me press control-delete to delete the following word and control-backspace for the preceding word, and I am pretty sure those didn't used to work either.

@Coach Natalie - Thanks for the response! Most of the issues I can deal with, it's the bad behavior of the backspace key that is the most egregious (and the missing Delete key ability). The rest however are not "custom shortcuts" - they are standard keyboard/OS behavior, on every single program, app and website and probably most OS's. These shortcuts behave this way on every other data entry box in Quicken Simplifi for example. It's just the Amount box that prevents it.

@EL1234 - Thanks for chiming in, no I'm not using Early Access mode. I would say the issues are only in "Amount" boxes where you are entering a dollar amount for a transaction. Everything else works as it should.

I would just note I tested this on another machine with simple basic Firefox installed, not signed into my profile or any extensions loaded, and I can repro both issues #1 and #2. So it should not require any further input from me to troubleshoot this. They just need to install FireFox somewhere and give it a try.

I will never use Chrome - sorry - I used to use Chrome since it first came out but they did too many inappropriate things like trying to disable ad-blockers and misuse privacy controls. So I switched to FireFox a few years ago and never looked back. Back in the early days of web programming you always tested everything on the Big Three - IE (now Edge), FireFox, and Chrome. It saddens me that FireFox has lost so much prestige in this modern era as it doesn't even get to the standard list of test cases… but based on these statistics I would still hope it could get a little love from the Quicken Simplifi team!

Based on what's reported above, it sounds like all the issues you raise are specific to the Amount field.

It also seems that issues #1 and #2 (both related to the backspace key) are specific to Firefox and do not occur in Chrome.

Perhaps that will help narrow down the troubleshooting, if anyone attempts to fix this.

Wow. I cannot believe the share for Chrome. It's my backup but I use Safari b/c works so much better in Apple products. I used IE (Edge) before moving to the Apple Universe.

But at some time or another, I did use all of them including Opera. Well, not Samsung Internet though I do have a Samsung Smart TV, so maybe I do. LOL

I just tested in Chrome/Windows and see the same behavior; in the Amount field, the Delete key doesn't work. The only option is to use the arrows to navigate later on in the number and then press Backspace. Pressing Delete works fine in other fields such as Payee and Category. Similarly, the Home and End keys work fine in text fields but not within the Amount field.

Chrome loses a bit of its share (and Safari gains) if you look only at North America — Simplifi's target market.

If you assume that Safari is mainly on Apple devices, it looks like Chrome has over 70% of the Windows market. I use Chrome because I think that, as market leader, it probably gets pride of place when software is being tested.

I’ve noticed weirdness with Chrome on Windows in one particular field where if I type in 1234.00, it keeps moving the cursor to the front after each entry, so you get something like 4321.00 of your not careful. Unfortunately, I haven’t picked out a pattern to even know which field it occurs in. Is this something you’ve noticed, too?
