The Spending report bar graph label area sometimes truncates names that it has plenty of room for. It's ok for it to have a limit on how long a category name can be, but it shouldn't arbitrarily truncate names that are far shorter than that limit.

For example, a very long category name gets cut off after about 32 characters, and that's ok.

But a much shorter category name gets cut off after about 14 characters. Why?

If the graph can accommodate 32 characters of the very, very long category name, then there should be room for the entire 16 character shorter name. It seems to get cut off for no reason.

It looks like your first screenshot was actually from another user's post, so I removed it from your post. We want to keep the focus on what you're experiencing specifically. The issues could be related, but they could also be completely unrelated, so we don't want to conflate the two or use another user's issue to diagnose what you're experiencing.

With that in mind, what exactly is causing the report bar graph area to change width? I wasn't able to reproduce the issue when changing my window size or anything similar, so we'll need to gather the exact steps you're taking in Quicken Simplifi to help us reproduce the behavior.

The exact steps are pretty easy. Just create some 1st and 2nd level categories with long names and look at the Spending report bar graph (both at the top level and by drilling down). Here's what I see when I do that:

1. - A long category name ("ThisIsAVeryVeryVeryLongCategoryName") at the top level gets truncated, in this case at 32 letters:

2. That same length name at the second level also truncates at 32 letters:

3. But for some reason, a much shorter name at the second level ("Home Improvement") truncates after just 14 letters:

In each of the above cases, the category name shown in the image is the longest one in the graph.

I can understand there being a 32 letter limit to the category name label area. But I don't understand why some shorter category names truncate at a much shorter length.

BTW: I tried inserting a space into "ThisIsAVeryVeryVeryLongCategoryName," making it "ThisIsAVery VeryVeryLongCategoryName," but that made no difference. It still truncated at 32 letters.

I was now able to reproduce what you're reporting, and I'm not sure why the number of characters differs. I don't think there's a 32-character limit, as the "really long category" that I created for testing shows the first 34 characters in the bar chart.

I'm not finding anything in our help center about the intended behavior here; however, I don't think I'd consider it a bug or anything along those lines, especially since you can hover over the bar to see the full name. With that, I'd recommend creating an Idea post if you'd like to see a change, or at least some consistency, added to this area of Quicken Simplifi, so other users can vote on your idea and our product team can review it.

It likely depends on the width of the characters. My sample name had a lot of wide capital letters.

I don't think I'd consider it a bug or anything along those lines, especially since you can hover over the bar to see the full name …

The interface does not work as one would expect. For unknown reasons, it truncates shorter labels but shows longer labels in full.

I've done what I can to make Quicken aware of this inconsistent behavior, and you have reproduced it. Whether the product team does anything about it is up to them at this point.

@DryHeat, an Idea post would be the best way to get something like this in front of the product team. They review Ideas, which allows them to gauge how many users are affected by a specific design or behavior and/or would like to see a change made.

Sure… But…

Personally, I don't think Idea Posts are a good vehicle for making the product team aware of verified but minor interface problems. I think it's better for them to go into a backlog so that, when a particular area is addressed for more important reasons, related small issues can be dealt with at the same time. But as the Community doesn't have access to that level of planning, there's not much that can be done.

You’re right that the Community doesn’t have visibility into the product team’s planning or enhancement decisions. Our Ideas process is in place to help the product team understand what users would like to see and consider for future updates.
