Splitting Income - Confusion

I'm trying to split a $1000 income transaction two categories: $500 paycheck and $500 bonus. When I enter $500 into the first row, it ADDS that amount to the total instead of subtracting it. So now it has a "Left to split" amount of $1500 instead of what it should be: $500. What am I missing?

"500" is a $500 debit, you want a $500 credit. "+500", just like how the amount left to split has a + in front of it.
