Linking to Recurring Transaction Does Not Update Payee & Category

When Simplifi does not recognize a recurring transaction and I have to manually link it, Simplifi does not change the payee or category to match the recurring transaction that I've set.

I used to link through the Reminders ribbon at the top of the Transaction screen, but this ribbon has been blank in the latest web update. If I instead link in the "View Transaction" box for an individual transaction, Simplifi links the transaction but does not update the Payee or Category to match the recurring transaction. This should be fixed, particularly if linking through "Reminders" is no longer an option.

    Hello @bcrossman,

Thanks for reaching out! The Payee and Category of the transaction should definitely be updated to match the details of the Reminder when linking. Can you provide screenshots showing the details of the linked transaction before and after?

As for linking directly from the Reminder, this is still an option in Quicken Simplifi and you should be able to do this. We do have a great support article here that has steps you can follow for linking transactions to reminders. https://help.simplifimoney.com/en/articles/4436514-linking-transactions-to-reminders

You may also try in a separate browser/incognito mode to see if something may be blocking the reminder feature, like a 3rd party ad blocker or security extension. Let us know if those steps work for you!

Thanks for the response, @Coach Jon. Here is a screen shot of the Reminder ribbon. I've tested it on different browsers in both private/incognito and non-private modes, but my Reminders have disappeared in all formats.

Here is the linked transaction, both before and after linking. As you can see, after manually linking the transaction, Simplifi signifies that it is linked to a recurring transaction but does not change the payee or category to match the recurring transaction (this is not a mortgage payment and the recurring transaction is not categorized as such).

    Hello @bcrossman,

Thanks for the visual! That is definitely strange that your reminder cards do not appear. Do your Reminders show up in the mobile application, or are they missing there as well? If you go to Bills & Payments in the web application, do the Reminders show up there?

    Thanks,

    Coach Jon

@Coach Jon Reminders do appear elsewhere — in Bills & Payments and on mobile — and when I link a recurring transaction through Reminders in those places, the payee and category are correctly updated. It's only the Transactions that is wonky and when I link by editing the individual transaction where the payee/category does not change.

    Thank you.

  • Any update on this concern? I am still having this happen when linking from the Transaction screen. It works on Pending transactions, but not on posted transactions. @Coach Jon

When selecting to "Link to existing recurring", the transaction does not automatically update the payee and category and it would be helpful if it did. Currently I've had to manually update payee and category even after linking to an existing recurring. This is using the web version. Thank you!

@rise, thanks for letting us know about this issue!

I have merged your post with the ongoing thread for this bug. This issue has already been escalated, so you can follow along here for updates. In the meantime, you should be able to link from the reminder itself (steps available here) to have the payee and category updated on the transaction. I personally use this method regularly because of this bug, and it works every time.

Thank you for your patience as we work to resolve this matter!

    Hello everyone!

I am back with an update from our product team for this issue! They have implemented a fix that should release with Quicken Simplifi Web 6.11.0. Be on the lookout for when that version releases, and let us know if this issue is resolved for you once you are updated.

    Thank you!

    Hello everyone,

I am back with another update. It looks like our product team has removed the recent fix version for this issue while they continue researching to verify whether Quicken Simplifi should update the payee and category of a transaction when linking from the transaction directly.

I will follow up when we have any further updates on this issue. Thank you for your patience!

I see what you mean. If I already have a transaction with a payee and a category and I link it to a recurring, I wouldn't necessarily want to update that.

Example: I have My SS and Wife's SS in recurring to keep them straight but once I get the transaction, I use SSA as the payee. I already have them categorized as Linda's SS and Steve's SS (mostly to check the 1099-SSA at the end of the year).

I am sure people have other examples. I switched from AT&T to Cricket. The Payee is now changed though the monthly reminder could be Cell Service. I renamed the AT&T recurring to Cricket Wireless however.

I agree. I wouldn't want the payee to change automatically, at least not all of the time! I could see situations where I'd want it (similar to if I had a rule set up to remove some extra gibberish from the end of a payee name) but I'm not sure how I'd want to define which should get updated. Same thing with category, especially if there's a chance that things will get auto-linked incorrectly.

I think it's also because when you link from a transaction, you are linking to the series itself. Whereas linking from a reminder matches that specific reminder instance to the transaction. That seems to be what's in question when reviewing the latest comments on the ticket, at least.

It's good to hear some use cases here, though! Thank you for that!

Oh, that's an interesting distinction I didn't think of!

Can the reminder have a different name/category than the entire series?

I don't think so, so it will be interesting to see what their research results in.

I think that Quicken Kirby and a couple of us discussed this issue a while back and mentioned that the Reminder Series name could be different from the payee for various reasons. I had forgotten about it.

At any rate, you can always change the payee afterwards as I have done on occasion.

I think that if Simplifi auto-changes the payee for you when auto-linking transactions, it makes it much harder to find transactions that were linked but shouldn't be.
