Yep, if your bank downloads the pending transaction and then downloads the cleared transaction a day or so later, it overwrites the pending. My bank also changes the date of the transaction.

Mine changes a lot and it adds a transaction number.

@SRC54 thanks for the quick response.

I guess that means I should not do anything (especially rules) before it clears or be very careful.

That also explains some strange behaviours.

My changes are on a credit card. At least it is not changing the date.

Well, every bank is slightly different. I only have 3 banks that download pendings. If you have a rule for the pending to change payee or mark as recurring, the second download should recognize it (being the same amount). I usually don't have problems with the cleared transactions matching the already downloaded pending but I do sometimes end up with a duplicate and I merge if I can.

What happens with my local bank is this:

    Pending downloads on Day 1

Pending redownloads on Day 2, sometimes matches, sometimes not. I delete the second one (duplicate)

Cleared transaction downloads on Day 3 and matches with the Pending.

My 2 credit cards (Amazon Visa and AMEX) only download the pending once and then the cleared. They usually match no problem. So have never paid much attention to the statement name. I will be on the lookout to see if they change description name as well.

I think I have had pending that did not match the rule, but when it cleared, matched the rule or recurring reminder.

Thanks for the extra info !!!

    Screenshot after the transaction cleared:

    Statement name as Cleared.jpg

The payee name stayed the same. The statement name changed from the payee name to the statement name from the CC.

I personally believe that Simplifi is doing the statement name change from when the transaction goes from pending to cleared. I do not think that American Express would would do something like that in this case. I will try to find a better example of a made up Simplifi name and see what happens. I checked some more of my pending and the pending name seems to be right so I do not know what is going on.Guessing at this point.

It may be Simplifi that is changing yours but mine is the same are what the Bank has on its web site, and it changes when it goes from Pending to Cleared.

Notice on the bank site how Publix changes when it is pending to when it's cleared:

Here are the same two right now in Simplifi:

Now these are the ones that take two days to clear. It may be different for the ones that clear in one day. I am still keeping an eye on Amex and Visa.

Chase Visa also adds a transaction number when it clears but no number when it is pending. AmEx doesn't seem to change it, but I have a pending right now and will check what happens when it clears.

I did not think to look at the AmEx Website. It looks like the website only shows the Payee name on pending and adds additional details when it clears. I guess that when it is pending they only want you to know the name and not some of the details because they are pending. Based on what I saw on the AmEx website the "appears on statement" looks correct and looks like it matches Simplifi.

No wonder why Simplifi has a problem matching the downloads. Do you make the rules/recurring to match pending or cleared?

No, I am very hands on; when the pending downloads, I split it and give it a friendly name although Simplifi usually gets the friendly name right.

On the accounts like Capital One that don't download pending, I add them manually.
