Investment Transaction Duplications (edited)

@UrsulaA I am thinking that the software that reads the Schwab data is flawed. I have 1 stock that is listed under Dividend, then listed again as a Pending dividend. I have one fund that is listed 5 times in June, twice on the 3rd and 3 times on the 30th. The 3rd is an ok date, but the 30th matches nothing.
There are other problems as well.

This sounds like a nightmare. I am glad my portfolio is simple and the balances are correct. I am not using the investment transactions module as much, do not find it reliable.

@UrsulaA and Coaches, I'm thinking SI has a problem reading Schwab statements as well.
In June I had one Non-Taxable dividend from the security. My Schwab account shows a straight Cash Dividend on 6-3. Then a Pending / Open Activity on 6-14. You might try checking your statement. With such small amounts it might not show though.
But, when I make the change from Interest to Payment it shouldn't be creating all those entries.
To whichever coach looks at this, those dates match the Transaction Detail page entries.
This is pretty horrendous. Sincerely, the production team really needs to spend time with the Schwab team and figure out what is going on. Because it is pretty clear that the Schwab files are not being interpreted correctly.
PS… I have no idea what happened to my August dividend.
Please note, this is not shown as a Non-Taxable dividend either. I have to manually enter that.

@neon45 - From your post "But, when I make the change from Interest to Payment it shouldn't be creating all those entries."
The change in action from Income Interest to Payment Deposit or vice versa is triggering duplicates. The duplicates sometimes download more than once after the action change.

I can see the triggering with the same dated change, but to generate entries on dates that don't come close to any statement date? And 3 of them at a time.
I'm basing my comments on a conversation I had with a Schwab IT guy who works integrating the reports for companies like Quicken. There is just no way we can have 3 and 4 repetitive entries.
Good luck to us.
Anybody else out there with these problems please speak-up. There have been 400+ views of this thread and it can't all be the coaches, UrsulA and me.

This is more than duplicates. Something really went weird in September. And not just with this stock. There was 1 payment in September on Sept 3rd according to my statement .
This just isn't right! And the August dividend is missing.
I can't believe I'm the only one that this is happening to.

Hello @neon45,
If I'm understanding correctly, now you are also noticing an issue with missing transactions? Since you mention September specifically, it's unlikely that this would be an issue with pending transactions. If you haven't already done so, I recommend checking to make sure the transactions aren't being hidden by a filter or possibly a search you did in the register (for more specific instructions, please the article on troubleshooting missing transactions by clicking this link).
Since you have been editing transactions and removing duplicates, is there any chance the missing ones got deleted by accident? Have you noticed any recent transactions failing to download?
I look forward to your response!

Hi Coach… Yes, I have searched high an low. I've become quite adept at searching. It is conceivable that it could have been deleted. Trying to find it is at the bottom of my workload. I'll probably just change the date on a Sept entry to August.
Just a quick comment; this is just 1 example of what I'm faced with. I have any number of securities with the same problem in different accounts.
September was a particularly egregious month for duplicates and incorrect dates.
With 8 accounts I'm pretty overwhelmed with problem, and it's only getting worse.
Do you have any feedback on when we can expect a CVS feature to download our Investment accounts. Like we can our banking.
Thanks.

Hello @neon45,
We do not have an ETA on when the feature would be added, but our product team is reviewing the ability to import/export investment transactions. I would suggest continuing to follow the idea post below for updates on this requested feature!
Thanks,
Coach Jon

Thanks Coach, I voted for that some time ago.

Simplifi… you are burying me and destroying the reason for my record keeping. I can not keep up with, and apparently, or find all the errors the program generates.
Here's my Statement entry for Oct, 2024. One entry.
Here's the entry in my Simplifi account:

Thank you for your reply,
I can see the ticket looking into the duplicate transactions issue (SIMPL-23341) is still open/in work. Is 14 October the most recent instance of this behavior you've noticed? Have you seen anything more recent, especially within the last 30 days?
Thank you!

Hi -Coach Kristina
September was the most egregious month followed by October with some stocks having 7 to 9 duplicates. I have been deleting a lot of them over the last couple of weeks.
I am finding duplicates in December. These are mostly dividends payments and do not necessarily show up every month. November is a slow month for payments.
On Oct 31, I have 4 Payments from VZ and 1 Income payment. And another with 3 and 1. I'm seeing them in Dec, but not to the same extent… yet.
One thing that I have noticed is when using ACTION to sort, and an individual stock shows under >INCOME DIVIDEND action…. not all the selected stocks will move to >OTHERS after changing the TYPE from Income to Payment. Even going back and forth will not always move a security from Income to Others. It's like the software didn't get the message to change over. I've noticed that changing multiple entries of the same stock. Three may switch to Other and the last one stays in Income.
Thanks..

I am also having issues with QS and Schwab.
I have Short Sell "Actions" coming in from Schwab, that are being labeled as "Personal/Income" by QS.
- These transactions happened on Dec 14
- This made them show up in my Spending Plan income
- fortunately they are auto set to "hide"
- BUT the entry shows up a light gray in the register, but not counted as income
- I changed the Action in QS from Personal Income to Short Sell
- This removed them from my Spending Plan, great
- A day or so later, all the transactions I changed were duplicated, very frustrating.
- I believe other transactions coming from CS are labelled properly but I have not gone into the register to compare side by side
I'll say this is disappointing as it seems the bugs and or poor implementation of features in QS have increased as of late. Coinciding with a price hike, it doesn't feel great and starts to erode at loyalty built up by QS's decent community support. Something the Mint never really had, a strong support community. But Mint at its core of aggregating data was pretty rock solid in my experience with them.
Hope this gets addressed soon.

@Coach Kristina I do have one question, can you identify what is causing the duplications? Is it just the simple task of editing one of the fields that causes a duplication? I'm not going to touch the register until this bug gets resolved so it would be great to understand what is causing the duplications.
Thanks

I defer to a coach for a final answer. I noticed my duplications occur when I change the action for the investment transaction. Any other field changes do not cause issues.

Changing the Actions definitely created duplications.

Just to clarify, "OTHERS", in this context are "Payments"

Hi Coach Kristina,
"Thank you for your reply,

-_-_-_
I am finding more multiple entries of one transaction since October. These four entries are all the same amount and interest on the same CD.
My transaction history shows it occurring on 11-19-24. My brokerage statement shows the 19th. I use nothing but the Transaction Detail - Beta window to modify and change the ACTION, and I only do it once.
I am at a loss as to how Simplifi adds the extra date. In other occurrences I see a dividend payed on the 2nd and the same one paid again on the 30th, or similar end of the month date. No idea why as I do not change dates.
After comparing Simp & SHB, entries for a year now, I'm leaning heavily towards errors in the way Simp interprets and collects the transactions.
Sorry about leaving the extra comment. I'm not too up on these chat programs.
Thanks…

Here's the latest observation, actually, a confirmation of earlier ones.
Sorting by ACTION, on the Transaction Activity page, changing to a Payment, from Income Dividend, the transaction does NOT move from the ACTION - Income Dividend list to the "OTHERS" Payment list. After shutting down Simp and reopening the same account and transaction, I now have 2 Payment transaction.
So there is something in the software that is not updating the changes as they occur. I have seen this numerous times and have written about it.
This, however, still does not address why I get the transaction duplicated with 2 different dates, one of which has no basis in fact.
Thanks,

Thank you for your reply,
To clarify, you edit the transaction and verify that there's just the one transaction. Then, next time you open Quicken Simplifi, the transaction has duplicated, both the original and the duplicate showing the Payment action, but one with an incorrect date? I can see that you posted a screenshot to my wall. In that screenshot, are the duplicates the ones dated the 18th or the ones dated the 19th? When you close Quicken Simplifi, is it several hours before you open it again, or are you closing then re-opening it right away?
Thank you!

Unfortunately, a lot of these actions become a blur. I have so many little mine fields in these accounts with 2 to 4 duplicates it’s extremely difficult to keep track of, let alone write what has happened. And then to try and answer a question about the actions multiple days later.
I have just found another 16 double entries for CD interest, over 3 months in the same account.
“I can see that you posted a screenshot to my wall. In that screenshot, are the duplicates the ones dated the 18th or the ones dated the 19th?”
The original, one and only, deposit was made on the 19th. So the 2 from the 18th were invented by Simp. The deposit on the 19th is a duplicate on the correct day.
When you close Quicken Simplifi, is it several hours before you open it again, or are you closing then re-opening it right away?
In this particular instance I was within minutes. I did that as an experiment. On other occasions, for example, with 6 duplicates, 5 of the 6 might move directly to OTHER with the last one staying in INCOME DIVIDEND.
Researching for this post I just found the same CD interest posted, from WFC, on the same date, Nine (9) times. The Schwab statement has a transaction date of 10/28.
This like playing the Whack-a-Mole game.
I’m pretty much beside myself and overwhelmed with this. It’s gone the far side of unusable for tax purposes.
As I've said previously, I'm convinced the root cause is how all these transaction come across from, and are interpreted from Schwab.

@neon45 not sure if you have seen this thread and not sure if a "simple" version of the transactions would work for you.
Your descriptions are pretty spot on, whack a mole, when it come to do debugging. I too have duplications but am not trying to resolve any of it until QS claims its fixed as I just feel like I'm a dog chasing the tail. At this point, I just ignore what's going on in the Investment registers and if a fix doesn't come soon, might consider just removing Investment all together, which i know upsets Net worth, but fortunately, I can get Investment transactions and Net worth reliably from other products. So the Simple feature above would address the Net Worth.
Concerning to me, is your Wells CD under Investments or Banking/Savings in the Accounts?
0 -
@Max1223 I had not seen this conversation, thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Yes, all of the Well's CD's were in the same investment account.
The stock below only pays one a month, on or around the 2nd. How the program manages all these extra entries is beyond me. And, here is what is so bizarre; Simp's balances match the brokerage web site. What is more bizarre is, as I delete all these extras transactions on the page, the page total changes; decreases by the amount of the deleted transaction.
There is a serious flaw in the program. I've mentioned it before, and, it's probably been dismissed, but I'm pretty much convinced the root of all this is how Simp has chosen to categorize the transaction sent from Schwab. I had none of these problems with Mint.
All this pretty much makes the program useless to me. It's sole purpose is to keep running totals so that I can forecast estimated taxes. That goal has not happened in the last 9 months.
Waiting to correct the transactions will be a monumental fiasco if I waited until they got the program running correctly.

Hello Coaches…
I hadn't thought about this until the other day since there were / are so many other problems.
I'm trying to understand how Simp's balances match the brokerage web site with all the double entries.
Using my Dec 26th post above, showing all the JQC duplicates, as I delete all these extras transactions on the page, the page total changes; decreases by the amount of the deleted transaction. But, it does not effect the Account balance which matched the Brokerage Account balance. How does that work?
And, just as a re-post, how can I have all those payments on the 30th, when the security only pays once, on the 1st.

Thank you for your reply,
To answer your question about the balance, it's because in connected accounts, Quicken Simplifi does not get the balance by totaling up all the transactions. It gets the balance information (that displays on the accounts list) directly from the financial institution. For more information on where the balance, market value, and other calculations in investment accounts come from, please review this article:
I hope this helps!

@Coach Kristina thanks for this information…very useful.
Then, theoretically, turning of the transaction downloading would not affect balances. See this string that has some context around transaction errors that are impacting other areas of QS, specifically in the Spending Plan

Thank you for your reply,
That is correct. In theory, if Quicken Simplifi offered a Simple investing option, like Quicken Classic does, then it would display positions and balances without the transaction information. Since your post about the transactions showing up in the Spending Plan is a bit off topic for the discussion, I split it into it's own separate discussion:
Thank you!

It's official… Simplifi has confused me to the point that I don't know what is really happening and what my individual balances really are when I run a report. 😱
I'd probably switch over to quicken, except there is no way to do that.
