After using Quicken for years, I've created multiple levels of sub categories. Simplifi only allows two levels - the main level, and then one sub-category level. Please provide the ability for unlimited sub-levels, or at least 4 or 5 total sub-levels..

Upvoted, though some might argue that it doesn't fit with the idea of "Simplifi" since that's rather complex. You could create pseudo sub-categories by the way you name them, such as Home Insurance - Vacation Home, or something along those lines. That way the detail is there, just probably not the rollup reporting you're looking for.

I also need this. If I can’t have multiple levels it’s just the same as YNAB or GoodBudget to me.

    I want breakdowns and reporting.

Being limited to just one subcategory layer is restricting to analyzing and properly grouping/tagging my transactions. Making this unlimited or at least letting us nest down a few subcategories would be a huge help for understanding my finances.

I think 2 levels of sub accounts would be a good compromise.  Not two complicated.

  • Yes, 2 levels of subcategories would be very helpful.

I'm a yes vote, mostly because so many thing fall under the category of, for example, shopping, where the shopping category may be more refine-able—- for example, electronics may include software, tools/add-ons/accessories, earbuds/headphones, computer hardware/tablets/phones, or even electronics service/support ("extended warranty" type things for example). "clothing" may be more refine-able to coats, shorts, pants/jeans, t-shirt, sweaters, shoes/sneakers, etc— and yes, it might be useful to get a report to see how much i spend specifically on shoes/sneakers every year as an example.

It would be great to have more category levels.

After using Simplifi for a year and planning for retirement I have been able to deal with the two levels of categories, Essential and Discretionary as most retirement calculators want these two separate. But with the introduction of roll over spending in the planned spending I find this incredibly constrictive.

I would like a planned spending for "Vacation" linked to a "Vacation" category, but I want the vacation category a subcategory of my discretionary spending and yet when I take a vacation I want the expenses in a category named after the vacation like Discretionary\Vacation\2024-NewYork. The planned spending will fund the vacation category each month just like a savings goal, but when money is categorized to the 2024-NewYork category the funds are automatically depleted and then any unused vacation monies are left for a future vacation.

This would replace my current method where I am saving for each vacation as a separate Savings Goal and manually dealing with the categorization, withdraw from savings goal to cover an expense, etc. This is not ideal as there are often vacation expenses well before the target date and sometimes even after the vacation has completed.

My goal is to use savings goals for true one-time expenses and planned spending where I need to set aside funds every month as an ongoing need or desire, like a vacation, taxes, or annual expense where I still need/want to set aside funds every month even after an expense is paid in that category. The two level category system is just too restrictive to get this done. There are many more examples, I could list but this is one that displays a good many variables.

There was briefly the ability to create nested categories 'at least' 3 levels deep. But they were never officially supported, and they turned that off.

Note below how I still have Shopping/Electronics/Accessories as a valid 3rd-level category… from when that was allowed… There is likely a place to vote for this feature still [edit: oops this is the place]

I agree - more levels of subcategories would be useful for reporting and anlaytics - make it easy to create rollup reports.

That explains so much @RobWilk . I had noticed this one day and never had the time to look into it. Then when I finally did, it wasn’t there so I just assumed I was seeing things.

  • The ability to nest categories at least several levels deep is a must have. The total benefit of Simplifi's many other features is reduced by the app's current inability to classify expenses, income, and other transactions according to the hierarchy of categories in the user's mind.
