Constant Problems with Simplifi

Because this forum is titled feedback, I thought I would take a minute and offer some. These problems have been constant in the short time I have been a user. These are just the highlights, not an all inclusive list.

  1. Accounts are constantly out of balance.
  2. Constant problems with duplicate transactions, whether cleared or pending. Unable to merge them.
  3. Non-duplicated transactions being counted twice for balance purposes.
  4. Recurring bills show late whey have been paid and are not late.
  5. Linked reminders unlink on their own.

Yesterday 11/28/24, at my third attempt at refreshing, all of my accounts were finally in order. This included a pending deposit (recurring) in my checking account. Today this app refreshed on its own (as normal) when I opened it to check on a recurring bill. Keep in mind that banks were closed yesterday due to the Thanksgiving holiday - this pending deposit amount was now counted twice throwing my balance with pending off by that amount. Not duplicated, but counted twice.

The only account that I never have a problem with is the cash account in my gun safe, and it's a manual account.

Please accept this post as honest feedback - not posted in anger - just being real.

It should not be this much work for a subscriber.

ETA: I use BofA, but since so many others have the same issues with other banks it seems unlikely that these problems lie with my bank.

I have similar problems with -all- my banks. I don't know exactly when it started, but it used to be more reliable balance-wise. I have transitioned to Quicken Classic, I still (for now) have Simplifi, but have signaled in the superuser forum that I am prepared to lose my access (which would mean no more access to my simplifi data, which isn't great for historical purposes). My access loss would likely be immediate, so i wouldn't have time to see if it gets fixed or not.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll adjust to QC. I'm re-upping with them tomorrow.

As you know I have seen all the problems from time to time though not often the unlinking Recurring Transactions. I still have Quicken Classic, which I intend to drop some day but will probably re-up in January because it works, and lets me see immediately when something is wrong in Simplifi. The things that are bank centric are the same in both Simplifi and Classic. Classic doesn't download pending transactions, which is currently the weak link in Simplifi.

Thanks for posting and summarizing things nicely!

    Hello @RobWilk,

If you need help with Quicken Classic, please feel free to reach out to the Quicken Classic Community:

Also, while there isn't a direct conversion tool from Quicken Simplifi to Quicken Classic, you can still export your transactions (excluding investment transactions) to a CSV file to preserve some of your history.

    I hope this helps!

@RobWilk "I have transitioned to Quicken Classic"

    Well, that's troubling…

Until and unless they cut off my access, @RockLee, I will continue to access simplifi and these forums. Simplifi, from what I understand, works a lot better if you don't manually enter transactions (the bugs with double counting affect things less). So, my manual entries will go into classic for now, and I will watch my simplifi data. If, by chance, they are able to resolve the issues I was having, I would love to switch back as there are a lot of things I genuinely prefer about simplifi.

For example, I miss the spending plan, but the budget in classic serves a similar purpose.

"Simplifi, from what I understand, works a lot better if you don't manually enter transactions"

This is a big deal to me @RobWilk and makes exactly zero sense.

I have a couple of recurring bills that I pay manually on their website (then manually enter into Simplifi), but they may not hit my bank for anywhere from 2 - 5 days.

Then when it does hit my bank, Simplifi goes full crazy and can take another 2 - 3 days for it to get accurate again.

Pretty nutty way to run a personal financial software program.

I've got some of those also but I usually don't bother entering them manually, I just let the recurring reminder take care of it on my cash flow projection. Simplifi still goes crazy when transactions clear sometimes, but it gets resolved faster that way it seems. The only downside is that I need to keep track of what I've paid (but if I see the reminder for a couple extra days it's okay since I remember that I paid it).

Ideally we would get the ability to mark a reminder as paid and let it show "paid" until it matches up with the bank transaction (and disappears from the reminders list).

@EL1234 Oh heck yes, that would be a great feature. Another thing that would be great is if this program actually worked.

Which banks are you using? I have been lucky so far that my banks do not show this issue. I use Wells Fargo and Marcus by Goldman Sachs for banking. Credit cards are Capital One, PNC, Barclays, and Macy's Credit Card (one of Citi's cards).

If I was experiencing the same issues you do, I will be frustrated as well. Hope they fix the issues soon to make the program usable.

My primary accounts are with BofA. Checking/savings/Visa. I can’t accept that any of these problems are the bank’s fault since QC has none of these problems.

I just closed (or will soon have closed) three accounts. Two were TD Bank accounts, one hasn't happen yet but will be a Synchrony account (I might soon open a synchrony "CareCredit" account if they let me, though). I also have Apple, Chase, Citi + CitiRetail, CapitalOne, and Pentagon Federal Credit Union (PenFed). Every single one of these is connected, and I was entering manual transactions in all of them when transactions were made (in an attempt to keep balances current). The only account out of all these that "might" have worked was Apple (or, more appropriately, when Apple was wrong, I could refresh it right away rather than waiitng 4-6 hours, to correct it). Yes, I now have relatively few banks I bank with, but the problems described here seem to apply in the exact same way to all of these accounts. I would love for this problem to get fixed - I got my price increase renewal e-mail today, I'm still undecided whether to continue with these issues - Simplifi has been so good for me mostly - It helped me get out of around $12,000 debt (with around a $2500/month income) pretty quickly - Now my net worth has been positive for a while (in the 'thousands', though i realize my net worth is less than many people's monthly paycheck).

Let me ask a question to see if it's just me, or if this is more global ——-

I'm retired, and an early riser. I like to get my computer banking done early while it's quiet with a cup of coffee. By early, I mean anywhere from 4-6 am Pacific time.

Prior to 9am Pacific, Simplifi is a complete disaster when it does its auto refresh when I open it.

Around 10am Pacific, Simplifi generally cleans itself up and seems mostly accurate.

For those of you who read this, does it work for you this way as well?

Can QS adjust their timing backwards about 6 hours?

Do I need to adjust my schedule to the Simplifi schedule, even though I shouldn't have to?

Can QS give us the option of manual vs auto refresh?

  • EL1234
    EL1234 Member ✭✭✭✭

I don't know if it's a 10am thing or if the "good hours" are after the second refresh of the day, which would be 4-6 hours after the first one. So if you opened the app at 4am and didn't look at all, then when you re-opened it at 10am it would be fixed.

Just a thought based on what I've seen/read about the balance issues so far.

  • TheReal702
    TheReal702 Member ✭✭✭

So, @EL1234 if I understand you correctly, I can count on the first refresh of the day being a complete disaster, and the next one being correct? That's pretty much what I have observed.

What I haven't tried, is waiting until 10am to open it for the first time of the day. I wonder what would happen if I did? Too late today obviously, mayme I'll try tomorrow.

  • EL1234
    EL1234 Member ✭✭✭✭

Yes, that pretty much aligns what I've seen lately :(

I usually open it around 9 or so which means that my balance is wrong until around 1 (give or take).

Really hoping that they get the balance issue fixed asap, as it messes up my cash flow projections which are very big reason why I use an app like this.

  • TheReal702
    TheReal702 Member ✭✭✭

Well, crap. Sounds like I should just stick with what I'm doing, at least it will be correct earlier in the day that way.

Question for those that have been around a while - has this program ever worked properly?

  • UrsulaA
    UrsulaA Superuser ✭✭✭✭

I have been using Simplifi for about a year. I had disconnections, balances not updating, and bugs related to reports display and spending plan but never something involving transactions in the way described here or other related threads. If I had such issues, I would be very frustrated.

It is indeed frustrating, but I renewed QC last week so I can at least know with absolute certainty I have accurate accounting.

I'm just hopeful that they will admit there are many problems and get them resolved. This program has too many useful features for me to abandon it without waiting to see if they can fix it.

  • UrsulaA
    UrsulaA Superuser ✭✭✭✭

I agree on the useful features. I like the projected cash flow, the spending plan, and the watchlists. Accurate data that can be trusted is critical. Simplifi is weak with investment transactions and investment performance. I have investment transaction duplicates and I do not trust the performance as sometimes it includes buys, sells, and deposits in the calculation. Those items are not part of performance.

I've been using Simpifi since 2020 and have never had these issues with my balances until about a month ago when this bug appeared. I've been happy with it for so long so I'm not rushing to start looking for alternatives. Really hoping they fix it soon…

To be fair, Simplifi does advertise the investment section as "Beta". However, I think that is being kind, I think Investments are Alpha at best. There are multiple missing important features, such downloads, full multi edit, no rules. And yea, the duplicate bug :(. I wish that Simplifi had just integrated investment transactions into the exiting transaction management.
